What is a Skin Lesion?
A lesion on the skin is an abnormal growth and can include moles, skin tags, and warts.
Moles are small colored spots on the skin made up of cells called melanocytes. They can be flat or raised and are usually circular in shape.
Skin tags are small growths that hang off the skin may look similar to warts. They are common, harmless, and are usually found on the neck, armpits or chest.
A wart is a small, rough growth or bump on the skin caused by human papillomavirus. Warts vary in appearance and may resemble a cauliflower. Surgery is not usually recommended for warts.
Mole Removal
Moles are commonly removed for cosmetic reasons or if they are believed to be cancerous. Men who have a mole in the beard area may want to have it removed as it may cause irritation when shaving.
Options for mole removal include a Surgical Excision or a Surgical Shave.
In a Surgical Excision, the area is numbed and the mole is cut out with a scalpel. The wound is then closed with sutures.
In a Surgical Shave, a small blade is used to cut around and beneath the mole. This technique doesn’t require sutures and is often used for smaller moles.
Risks of Mole Removal
The risks involving mole removal depend on the method used to remove the mole. All procedures carry some risk, but complications from the procedure are extremely rare.
Some of the risks include infection, scarring, or nerve damage. Discomfort after surgery may be relieved with pain medication.
Skin Tag Removal
Although a skin tag is harmless in most cases, it may become irritated if clothing rubs against it.
If a skin tag bothers you, consider making an appointment with us to have it removed. Skin tags may be frozen or burnt off similar to how warts are removed.
Skin tags may also be removed surgically using local anesthetic. The growth does not usually grow back after it is removed.
Do not try to remove skin tags yourself as it may bleed heavily.
