Chin Augmentation
Case 5465
This man disliked his weak chin. He wished to have a stronger jawline and chin. This can be achieved using an implant, cutting / moving the bone or with fillers. In this case Dr. Anzarut increased the projection, vertical height and width of his chin using a silicone implant. This procedure can be done under local anesthetic (freezing) or general anesthetic.
Implants come in many sizes and shapes. They can be placed through an incision in the mouth or an incision under the chin. This patient had an incision under the chin. Can you see the scar after one year? These scars do hide well.
Chin implants are the most popular type of facial implant. They can be used in isolation. They are also used at the time of nose surgery or face lift surgery to improve harmony of the facial profile.
Recovery after a chin implant is variable. Pain usually resolves after 24 – 48 hours. Bruising may remain for 1-3 weeks. The scar will improve over the first few months and fully mature after 12- 24 months.
Other methods of chin augmentation include cutting and repositioning the bone. This leads to a longer recovery and noticeable bone defects where the cuts are made. Fillers can be used to augment the chin. These are temporary and not as predictable.
